The Goodwill Project finalist: Tamaca Therapy Services

Acting with honour and reverence so we can advocate for, participate in, and witness positive change in the lives of others.

What We Do

Tamaca Therapy Services Inc. is a comprehensive team of Allied Health specialists, including Speech-Language Pathologists, Occupational Therapists, Physical Therapist, Psychologists, and more, who travel to First Nations communities to address early development and rehabilitation in children and youth.

Our teams work collaboratively with families and community staff and in partnership with organizations such as the Stollery Children’s Hospital & Glenrose Rehabilitation Hospital allowing families to access health and wellness services within their own communities.  With the onset of Covid, we have pivoted to add virtual services to complement and enhance our ability to support these remote locations.

Since we incorporated in late 2017, the Tamaca Team has grown to 37 therapists and continues to grow.  We have 52 contracts throughout Alberta and the Northwest Territories with several more agreements in the works.  Tamaca has seen continued growth, despite school and community closures due to Covid 19.

Most importantly, the Tamaca Team has delivered services to hundreds of children allowing them to strive for their best potential and thrive in their home communities.  An example of the difference we are making in the lives of many is a four-year-old boy and his family who live in a northern remote community.  The Tamaca delivery model ensures this family is not required to make the 8-hour bus ride to the Stollery for treatment.

Moving forward, we are on track to far surpass our last few years in annual revenue.  The demand for this type of service continues to grow and we have new contract requests all the time.  Tamaca is working hard to continue to expand our team to meet the demand. Finally, we have many goals to expand and further support and promote health and wellness in rural, remote, and First Nations communities.

First Nations children and their families deserve full and equal access to early intervention and ongoing rehabilitation care.  Tamaca Therapy Services is passionate about helping communities build networks of support that will help children and their families grow and thrive in their home communities.

Who We Are

My name is Megan Stock and I am the founder of Tamaca Therapy Services Inc.  I am a wife, mother of 3 in a very active family.  I ski, play squash and hockey, and I am a Speech-Language Pathologist of 23 years.  I was privileged to grow up in a diverse community of Dene, Metis and Inuit which strongly influenced the path I have taken in my career.

From 2011 to 2017 I worked on a contract with First Nations & Inuit Health Branch, Health Canada that focused on the assessment and identification of speech & language needs in children but didn’t involve the more important component of the provision of therapy services.  For 6 years I travelled to more than 40 of the First Nations communities throughout Alberta and became increasingly aware of the significant gap in access to child health services within First Nations communities; not only regarding speech and language intervention but in the rehabilitation of fine and gross development and mental health services as well.  Imagine as a parent, having your child diagnosed with a speech & language delay and needing to travel an hour or three hours away from your home to attend regular speech & language therapy sessions.  You can see how prohibitive that could be.

I saw an opportunity to really impact the health and wellness outcomes for children in First Nations communities.  I began creating a model of delivering services that also honours and values culturally safe and responsive care. That model became Tamaca Therapy Services.
