5 local charities to support this holiday season

The holiday season brings out the spirit of generosity and goodwill. Unfortunately, with the significant rise in the cost of living, more people need help this year. If you’re in the position to do so, we wanted to encourage you to give back this Christmas.

The pool of people able to give has shrunk. If you can give, please give more. If you normally give a hundred, give two hundred. Accumulate less and give more.

– Jeff Tetz, Founder of Santa YEG

Not sure where to give? The CommAlert Group has researched and reached out to local charities to provide this list of organizations that could use your donation this year.

The Bissell Centre

The Bissell Centre is an inclusive organization that recognizes the dignity and strengths of people that need support to overcome poverty. They offer empowering and supportive programs for individuals and families that help people rise from poverty, find hope for healthy futures and build strong communities.

Your donation this holiday season will help provide healthy meals to individuals and families. With high food costs, having meals provided will mean a person or family will not have to choose between paying rent or eating. Learn more about how your donation prevents homelessness.

Santa YEG

Santa YEG and the Grant a Wish Program is a local initiative that brightens the holidays for individuals and families in need. Your donation to the program will help Santa YEG gift families in need with a $500 Visa gift card to offer a little help this Christmas. If you know a family in need, you can also nominate them.

We never expected it to amount to much, but the way the city has embraced us has been something I couldn’t have predicted. We’ve served over 25,000 meals and donated over 100k to families in need just during Covid alone.

– Jeff Tetz

Recipients of the Grant a Wish Program will receive their gift card on Delivering Compassion YEG Day on December 16, so get your donations in soon! You can also join in the spirit of giving and fun with the Santa YEG-a-thon, a live event with host Jeff Tetz at Road 55. All proceeds from ticket sales will be donated to the cause. The Christmas Bureau

The Christmas Bureau of Edmonton and the Strathcona Christmas Bureau in Sherwood Park have the same mission: to bring joy to the table this holiday season. By donating to the Christmas Bureau, you will help families, seniors, and individuals in need by providing a Christmas hamper with a festive meal and gifts.

Our friends at the Strathcona Christmas Bureau reported a record number of families requesting hampers this year. With the need high, the need for donations is higher. Your gift will offer compassion, joy, and kindness to a family or individual in need.

Edmonton’s Food Bank

Edmonton’s Food Bank was founded in 1981 and was Canada’s first-ever food bank. It provides food for over 30,000 people in Edmonton each month. With the rising cost of food and living, more people in our community require assistance from the food bank that didn’t before. That means the food bank needs extra support in food, monetary, and time donations this year. Learn more about ways to give to Edmonton’s Food Bank.

You can drop off non-perishable food items at any major grocery store or a City of Edmonton Fire Station. You can also donate to their main warehouse at 11508-120 Street.
