CommAlert extends the Goodwill Project, offering free office space this summer

The CommAlert Group is offering the next generation of local startups and entrepreneurs free downtown office space this summer. The program will also include a dedicated space for Indigenous artists to create, teach and inspire through art and culture.

Where it started.

In late 2021, CommAlert decided to give away its vacant office space on Jasper Avenue, downtown Edmonton. The initiative was called The Goodwill Project, and the prize was a fully furnished office with the internet and lease paid for two years. This gift had a $250,000 value. The initiative invited passionate and diverse businesses to share how they planned on impacting the world and their community.

Over 70 applications were received, and a panel of judges narrowed the number to the top five. The panel included local, experienced, and respected business leaders in Edmonton: Lazina McKenzie, Cheryll Watson, Debbie Gust, Kristina Milke, Tanis Carwell, and Lynsae Moon.

The Goodwill Project continues.

The office lease is almost up, and the winner has moved on! They’ve decided to move out early, leaving the space vacant again until mid-September.

“We want to create opportunities for Generation Z to develop something uniquely their own, utilizing this space to develop the future of tech in Edmonton,” said Tim Carwell, CEO of The CommAlert Group. “We want to turn over the keys to the next generation and then get out of their way.”

In addition to the free office space, CommAlert will carve out a little area for Indigenous artists to teach, create and inspire through art. This will be done in the Indigenous way, led by Elders from Treaty 6.

Interested entrepreneurs and startups can apply by emailing the CommAlert Group at CSR@commalert.com or call 1-800-613-7774

Those accepted will gain access to the space this summer and into the first weeks of September. Office furniture will be gifted to some participants at the end of the program.

“We look forward to seeing how young innovators and creators utilize this special space! All we ask for in return is feedback on what went well and what didn’t. This is a trust-based exercise with the next generation of leaders.” said Carwell.
