National Day for Truth and Reconciliation – Introducing Indigenous Centres of Excellence and a vision for healing, reconciliation, and growth
Across Canada, the movement toward healing, reconciliation, and fostering Indigenous leadership is gaining momentum. This effort involves various stakeholders, from government to private organizations and Indigenous communities themselves, working together to create sustainable and meaningful change. Our commitment to Reconciliation is highlighted by our vision for Indigenous Centres of Excellence.
These Centres will aim to become focal points where Indigenous traditions, knowledge, and modern development intersect. Each Centre will offer a space for Indigenous people and their allies to collaborate on crucial issues, fostering Indigenous-led healing, business capacity building, and cultural preservation and revitalization.
While we are in the early stages of this initiative, the vision is to create these Centres, across various regions, each tailored to the unique needs, histories, and strengths of the local Indigenous communities. These spaces are intended to support efforts in areas such as:
- Healing and Reconciliation: Building on traditional and contemporary healing practices, the Centres aim to create a safe environment for Indigenous individuals and communities to connect and heal together.
- Indigenous Business and Economic Development: The Centres will provide resources and support for Indigenous business owners and entrepreneurs to expand their capacities, fostering sustainable economic growth within their communities.
- Cultural Preservation and Innovation: Honoring the rich histories of Indigenous communities, these Centres will be a place where language revitalization, arts, ceremonies, and traditions are celebrated and shared.
- Indigenous Trade and Strategy: The Centres will also explore opportunities to engage in Indigenous-led trade and economic strategies, creating pathways for sustainable business growth and partnerships.
While these concepts reflect the broad vision for Indigenous Centres of Excellence, the project is still in its early phases. By working closely with Indigenous leaders, communities, and stakeholders, we hope to nurture these spaces with the thoughtfulness and care they deserve.
As these plans evolve, our primary focus remains on listening to the voices of Indigenous communities. This process will ensure that the Centres are developed in a way that honours the past while building a future that supports Indigenous-led growth, healing, and innovation. The future of these Centres will depend on the continued collaboration and guidance from those most impacted by this work.
As we move forward, we remain committed to the core values of reconciliation, inclusivity, and respect for the deep cultural traditions that continue to shape and strengthen Indigenous communities across Canada.
